OUYA Wants to Back Your Kickstarter Project

And it’s launching a $1 million matching fund to do it. Here’s what’s up.

Looks like OUYA is getting back to its roots.

Just three weeks after its retail debut, the independent game-maker announced Thursday its Free the Games Fund, a $1 million matching initiative to support video game developement on Kickstarter.

But this isn’t just a warm and fuzzy charity move.

“We’ve seen dozens of great games launch on Kickstarter, and now we are in the enviable position of being able to give back and secure the best, exclusive games for OUYA,” said CEO Julie Uhrman in a statement to the press.

According to the statement, to be eligible for any funding, project creators have to agree to “make their game exclusive on OUYA for a minimum of six months beginning on the date the title becomes available for download on OUYA.”

Other requirements: Projects have to be launched between August 9, 2013 and August 10, 2014; it has to meet a minimum pledge goal of $50,000; and OUYA will only match up to $250,000.

OUYA launched on Kickstarter just over a year ago and quickly received $8.5 million in funding from supporters. In May, the company raised a $15 million venture round, led by Kleiner Perkins.

Last month, the company’s long-awaited $99 Android-based video game console hit shelves at major retailers and online retailers, and has so far received mixed reviews from gamers.
